Itinerary

In this trek can last for two or three days depending on whether you chose the option of camping in Waqrapukara (which would add the third day to this trip). On the first day we will leav e early to go to Valle Sur. We will visit Andahuaylillas and Pikillaqta and then continue on to Raqchi which is 117km from Cusco.

Raqchi (Temple of Wiracocha or Partenon Inka) is considered one of the boldest engineering works carried out by the Inkas.

The archeological area consists of:

-The Temple of Wiracocha; construction of stone and mud ubicado en una explanada y dividido en dos naves con gigantescas columnas y uros que llegan a tener 14 metros de altura

-Military barracks

-The nucleus priest??

-The Inkan baths

After visiting Raqchi, we will travel to Acomayo by the route or circuit of the four lagoons. In Acumayo we will spend the night in a hotel, to be able to visit Waqrapukara the next day.

We will do the first part of this tour by car until arriving to the town of Huayqui. Here we will begin our trek by the very ancient Inka trail. It is also possible to visit the cave paintings of ‘llamajpinta’.

Waqrapukara (Strength of the horns) is found at 4300msnm. It is surrounded by impressive plazas and a forest of stones. As an archaeological monument is it marvellous and its spectacular rock formations make it a top-level route.

The Ministry of Culture has implemented a zone for camping near to Waqrapukara; if you chose to add another day to this trip you will be able to enjoy camping in the beautiful surroundings of this archaeological site.

Finishing our tour of Waqrapukara, we will return to Huayqui where our private transport will take us back to Cusco.

This trek can last for one or two days. Leaving from the lagoon of Piuray we will ascend for about two hours and a half until we cross the opening that separates us from the Sacred Valley, to then descend or about an hour and a half until arriving to the town of Huch’uy Qosqo. The other alternative is to leave from Tambomachay and trek until Lamay, passing through Huch´uy Qosqo, therefore this trek can be done in one day.

Itinerary

1 day:

After exploring and getting to know well the little known Inkan city and admiring the views it offers of the Sacred Valley, we will descend for about two more hours, until arriving to the town of Lamay, where we will take our private transport back to Cusco.

2 days:

We will camp in the surrounding areas of Huch’uy Qosqo to be a ble to enjoy and get to know the hidden secret s of this amazing Inkan city. On the return we will trek on a well conserved Inka trail that connects Huch’uy Qosqo with Tambomachay. From here we will take our private transport back to Cusco.

HUCH’UY QOSQO:

It is found in the highest part of the Sacred Valley, without vehicular access and is not visited by many tourists. It consists of platforms, courtyards, plazas, buildings of different sizes and quality as well as a pedestrian Inkan path. There is evidence of an advanced hydraulic system where the water flowed through channels carved in stone, perfectly assembled together to prevent leakage of water. The construction has a slight inward inclination, which is guaranteed as better during earthquakes.

One of the most notable characteristics of this site is of its the assembly in stages, following the natural slope of the mountain; the result is of great aesthetic quality. Another feature is that buildings are built to form squares or patios, but not touching each other, so that there are also alleys or transit spaces between buildings.

Q’ENQO-SALAPUNKI (TEMPLE OF THE MOON)-LANLAKUYOQ (ZONA X)-CHAKAN (INKA BRIDGE) –

Itinerary

SACSAYHUAMAN

This is an excellent alternative whilst you are getting acclimatized to the high altitude of Cusco. It is a fun and relaxing tour by horse, passing by different Inkan temples of differing importance.

This is a trip that will allow us to appreciate beautiful sights, passing through forests and mountains above the city of Cusco in the north part; under the summits of Apu Senqa.

Our private transport will collect us from the hotel to take us to Q’enqo. We will visit and get to know the hidden secret s of this special Inkan construction, to later walk 200 meters to get to the horses. We will ride by horse 500 meters to the Temple of the Moon (Salapunki in Quechua) and we will explore this magnificent Inkan site.

We will then ride up the mountain. Our first stop will be at Lanlakuyoq (House of Elves), a series of passages (chinkanas), tunnels and caves in the rock of a small mountain. This is a place full of energy and we will enjoy getting to know and exploring these caves from the inside.

We will continue, arriving to Chakan (Inka bridge). This is a beautiful site surrounded by terraces or platforms in which the water that flows down from Apu Senqa has formed into an enormous cave in the rock. Genious Inkan constructors had worked to create a window in the rock to form a balcony over the river, in 100 meters of altitude.

To continue, we will begin to descend by a route that will take us through forests and small streams that will eventually lead us to Sacsayhuaman. Here we will leave the horses, to be able to calmly visit Sacsayhuaman and then begin to return back to the city.

Itinerary

This tour is known as the ‘Mystic route of the God Wiracocha’ We will dedicate this day to exploring the South Valley, the settlement of cultures that gave rise to the Inca Empire. We will travel through different chronological eras, by visiting and studying these cultural manifestations. Cultures that once populated this area, just to mention a few are; Marcavalle, Wari and Lucre.

Tipon (3650):

Situated 27km SE of Cusco, in its highest part (3800msnm) are found petroglyphs named Cruz Moco, which would be a Huaca or worship center and part of the Ceque of Antisuyo. Tipon’s origins date back to pre-Inca times around 1200 D.C., corresponding with the Wari Empire.

Remains have been found in a wall of 6km of longitude that surrounds the city. Later on, the Inka Wiracocha occupied Tipon around the years of 1400 who transformed it, making it bigger and more developed. The most well-known zone is compiled of 13 terraces or platforms. It also includes urban sectors for nobility, the priests, the inhabitants of the ayllu as well as storage buildings and defense. There is also a ceremonial plaza and fonts. Due to the different microclimates, the area was conducive to agricultural experimentation of different products and possibly also used to develop decorative gardens for Wiracocha. The Inkan engineers used different slopes, of differing width and depth to control the speed of the water used to distribute their fall and the inclination of the walls to diminish their erosion on the stone.

Andahuaylillas (3121):

Situated about 40km SE of Cusco, it is known for its colonial architecture. Its main plaza is surrounded by ancient houses and trees of Pisonay. The main attraction of this area is its church; Sistine Chapel of America constructed in the century XVII whose interior is decora ted with murals, barowue altars of carved wood and paintings from the Cusqueñan School of Art. It is not possible to leave without visiting the Waka Museum: Sacred stones of Waro, the town adjacent to Andahuaylillas and the Museum of Sito of this city.

Pikillaqta:

It is considered as one of the most well-known and best conserved cities in Peru. It presents characteristics of a large urban center corresponding to the time of the Wari (century VI-IX), with more than 1000 constructions from plazas, warehouses for food, houses, temples, long and narrow streets and buildings that had up to four levels. It is not known in which moment or why this city was abandoned.

Itinerary

We will visit these important Inkan sites whilst also having the time to visit the artisanal market of Pisaq, with natural viewpoints displaying spectacular views and production centers of local artisans. After lunch we will visit a workshop of ceramics in Urubamba and finish the day in Ollantaytambo.

Pisac (3300msnm):

It is believed that Pisac was a kind of Hacienda Real of Inka Pachacutec. It consists of scattered areas of terracing, domestic and ceremonial structures and buildings that stand out for the quality of its masonry. Its location is strategic; near Cusco, at the entrance of the Sacred Valley and on the way to the jungle. The name Pisac is derived most probably from the Quechua word of Perdiz;

which is a bird local to this area, and according to some investigators the shape of the area is similar to that of the bird. According to the investigator Angles Vargas the ruins of Pisac, together with Cusco and Pikillaqta form an equilateral triangle in which each point is 33km apart and the three places are found at 3300msnm.

Ollantaytambo (2792msnm):

Situated about 80km North East of Cusco, it is one of the most monumental architectural complexes of the ancient Inca Empire. The complexes that it contains include; archeological, astronomical, administrative, of livestock and agricultural. It is one of the few cities that retains much of its original layout, including some buildings that are still in use. It is credited with different functions; possibly used as a military construction to protect the capital of the Inkas against possible invasions from the Antis. It is also said that it was constructed enable paths to Antisuyo.

Today, Ollantaytambo is a big tourist attraction because of its Inkan constructions and as one of the main stops for the four day, three night trek by the Inka trail to Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

In Chinchero we will visit a group of towns that demonstrate the techniques that they use toproduce textiles; recognized worldwide. We will visit the archeological sites and after lunch we will finish the day visiting the Salinas of Maras and Moray.

Chinchero 3160msnm):

Known as the rainbow city, Chinchero is situated 28km North East of Cusco. Its towns contain constructions that remain almost fully intact. It was a center of agricultural production, highlighting its platforms, warehouses and irrigation system. Over the palace of Tupac Yupanqui a catholic church was built (1607), its walls are decorated with works by Diego Quispe Tito; the highest representative of the Cusqueñan school. On Sundays the local people dress in their traditional, colorful clothing and meet in the main plaza to exchange their products. This town has been able to preserve an extraordinary way of living; of value and intangible heritage.

Moray (3500msnm):

Found at 38km North East of Cusco, it was possibly a research centre where they conducted experiments of crops grown at different altitudes. The arrangement of their platforms produces a gradient of microclimates, with the circular terraces being of a higher temperature and gradually decreasing towards the exterior therefore being able to form twenty different microclimates.

Maras (3028 msnm):

Maras is Kachi Raqay in Quechua is situated 48km North East of Cusco. It was an important town during the Virreynato (leading provider of salt in the Southern highlands). The salineras of Maras are mines of salt whose explotacion is as old as Tahuantinsuyo. Located on the slope of the hill, it is formed of five thousand ponds of about five meters each, in forms of terraces or platforms fed by a stream of salt water that flows from the mountain.

SACSAYHUAMAN

According to Inca oral history, Tupac Inca “remembered that his father Pachacuti had called city of Cuzco the lion city. He said that the tail was where the two rivers unite which flow through it, that the body was the great square and the houses round it, and that the head was wanting.” The Inca decided the “best head would be to make a fortress on a high plateau to the north of the city.”[5]:105 But archeologists have found that Saksaywaman was built by the preceding Killike culture; it was expanded by the Inca beginning about the 13th century.

Q’ENQO

Q’enqo in Quechua means ‘labyrinth’ and one of its uses was as an astronomical observatory. In Inkanato times, it was easily visible from Qorikancha.

PUKAPUKARA

Pukapukara means ‘Red Strength’. It is a military construction, also used as an astronomicalobservatory. It is composed of large walls, terraces and stairways. It was part of the defensive set of Cusco.

TAMBOMACHAY

Its name in Quechua is derived from two words; Tampu which means collective accommodation and Mach’ay which means place of rest. It is compiled of structures of finely carves stone, aqueducts and waterfalls. It is related to the worship of water and is considered as one of the shrines of the first sect of Antisuyo.

Itinerary

This circuit takes us to discover the ancient magical and religious aspects of Cusco, visiting by foot the ancient ritual sites. In this way we will try to get closer to this rich Andean culture.

We will be collected from Cusco and taken to the eastern part of the city. We will begin our tour by visiting Pumamarka (The temple of Anawarke, the wife of Pachacutec), appreciating its fine architecture, embodied in a semi-circular torreon similar to that of Qorikancha. Next we will visit

Killawata (where the moon is amarra), and Rumiwasi (house of stone) whose main door is aligned perfectly with the ocaso de la Cruz del Sur el 15 de mayo.

We will continue our trek by the Inka trail from Antisuyo until arriving to Kallachaka, another fine construction which apart from being used for ritual purposes, was also used as an astronomical observatory.

From Kallachaka we will go to Salapunki (Temple of the moon), where in ancient times there were figures of animals such as monkeys and snakes inscripted into the stones. Making use of its natural state, its constructors built a temple in the cave that is crowned with a hole so that when there is a full moon, and more likely in the season of winter, at midnight the light from the moon illuminates the whole temple.

We will continue our trek until arriving to Q’enqo where we will finally finish our morning visiting these splendid constructions.

We will have lunch in a local restaurant whilst staying in the archeological park, and after resting we will finish the day by visiting the magnificent Sacsayhuaman and its surrounding areas. We will get the chance to visit the viewpoint Cruz Moco where excellent panoramic photos can be taken of the city of Cusco. We will be able to visit all three amazing touristic zones until sunset, where we will then return back down to the city.

Itinerary

The leaves used for the reading must be brought to a person who has this gift and should have some qualities: the most desirable are the colour and freshness of the leaves. The reading is carried out on a handmade red fabric, although long ago it was done on pre-Inca textiles. The consultation implies the presence of a religious image and a bell; the officer must ask for permission to make the reading through prayers in Quechua or Aymara, the two main pre-Hispanic languages. After that, the bell is rung in the direction of the four cardinal points and a signal is made holding some coca leaves in these same directions. Occasionally, both the consultant and the officer chew coca leaves before beginning the ritual. According to tradition, if the taste is sweet it’s possible to continue the ritual, if they’re bitter it’s recommended not to do so.

It’s starts with the officer who puts a leave on both edges of the fabric, showing the front on one side and on the other the rear of them. This will help to understand if the answer is positive or negative. Then a handful of leaves is dropped on the fabric and the quantity of leaves that fall showing the front side is more often a positive response. The same answer is attributed if the majority of larger leaves fall to the edges of the fabric. The interpretation also includes the shape of the leaves, shades and other characteristics.

Shamans ensure that in the particular case of the coca leaf, they meet with the Mother Spirit, the soul of the plant. These spiritual teachers, in this ritual, communicate from spirit to spirit, plunging into a higher state of consciousness. Itinerary

The mother, doctor and teacher Ayahuasca comes from the Amazon Forest, known and used for millenniums by indigenous Amazonian peoples so much that is considered to be the spirit of Nature. It is the foundation of spirituality, shamanism, traditional medicine and indigenous vision of the cosmos.

The word Ayahuasca has its origins in Quechua and means “rope that combines the terrestrial world with the one of the spirits.” The Ayahuasca is used to establish a connection with the magical levels, in an “expansion of consciousness”, because it has a spirit. It’s used to purify and heal spirit, body, mind and emotions, it takes us on a magical reality, to a state of higher consciousness, in which we are shown different realities which cannot be observed in an ordinary state. This state of higher consciousness may be defined as the invisible in the visible, the irrational in the rational. During this connection with the magical and spiritual world, in which we connect with Ayahuasca, there is a better understanding and consciousness concerning existence in its deepest meanings.

It’s a subliminal-mystical experience in which a conscious human being can alter the essence of his/her self because this perception, Ayahuasca, is Mother, Teacher and Doctor. In this context, the spirit of Ayahuasca heals, teaches and guides people to cope with everyday’s challenges, it helps to understand the harmonious relationship with Mother Nature, with other beings and with the universe, to heal the relationship with ourselves.

Indigenous peoples, where the Ayahuasca is used, say: “with the spirit of Ayahuasca you will see and understand.” Ayahuasca makes us aware of our spiritual gifts.
