SAN PEDRO CEREMONY
Itinerary
The ceremony of San Pedro, also known as “Wachuma”, was widespread at the time of the ancient Peruvians for its psychoactive effects, caused by the huge amount of alkaloids used, particularly mescaline.
The archaeological remains confirm that already in the year 3000 BC, this medicinal plant was used in Chavin de Huantar, considered as the largest center of spiritual initiation in South America. Since that time, its use has spread widely both temporally and spatially, from the Incas to the present day.
This leads us to talk about its multiple uses in both sacred and medical fields: sacred as it can lead people to communicate directly with the divine; medical because they can heal and open consciousness to self-learning. This substance can lead people to having a different perception of their own body, causing increased awareness for nature and the landscape around.
Before the ceremony it’s very important to observe a strict diet, possible reactions include vomiting and diarrhoea, which facilitate detoxification. The participant enters into another state of mind, there could be visions in which life is analysed as a close relationship with the universe, making contact with the Pacha Mama.
The San Pedro ritual takes place during the day, to have a better body’s response to the effects of the Medicinal Plant; It is conducted by a shaman or an Andean priest, specialist in this kind of ritual.
